The Cooperative Care Approach

Cooperative care gives the dog a choice signal — a specific position or action that means "I am ready, you may proceed." A common one is a chin rest on a towel. While the dog holds the chin rest, you can handle them.

Start by teaching the chin rest without any grooming. Reward the position heavily until your dog offers it eagerly. Then introduce one element at a time — touch a paw while the chin is resting. If the dog lifts their head, remove your hand and wait. When the chin drops again, try again.
