LESSON 5 · Socialize Like a Star

Rehabbing a Phobic Dog

A dog that has already been forced through grooming needs extra patience, because it has learned that tools predict discomfort. You cannot reason it out of the fear — you have to rebuild the association from below its panic threshold.

Work at a distance where the dog stays relaxed and can still take a treat. If it refuses food, you are too close, so back off until it eats again. Let the dog see the tool turned off and idle on the floor, then end the session before any stress appears. Progress is measured in calm sessions, not in nails clipped.
