LESSON 3 · Master the Basics

Proofing With Jackpots

Once the head-snap is automatic in a quiet room, start adding friction. Say the name while the dog sniffs the floor, watches the window, or a family member walks past.

When they break away from the distraction and look, pay big: a jackpot of several treats, one after another. Big wins teach the dog that choosing you beats the distraction.

In loud, busy places, back the name with a hand signal — a tap on your chest or a wave — so they get a visual cue when the world is drowning out your voice.
