Down Is Harder Than Sit

From a down, a dog's belly is exposed and getting back up takes an extra beat. To a sit, a dog can spring up in an instant. So lying flat asks the dog to give up a bit of readiness.

The extra effort pays off. A dog in a down relaxes more deeply than one in a sit, because lying flat lets the body switch into rest mode instead of staying braced to move.
