LESSON 7 · Master the Basics

Why Grabbing Fails

When your dog has something they should not have, your instinct is to reach in and take it. That backfires two ways: the dog swallows the item faster to keep it, or it guards more aggressively because a hand reaching toward its mouth feels threatening.

Chase your dog for a stolen item and you teach a rewarding game — the pursuit itself is high-value entertainment. The slipper is not the prize; your attention is. Every chase teaches the dog to grab things and bolt, getting quicker each time.
