The Trade System
Hold a high-value treat near your dog's nose while it holds an item. Most dogs will open their mouth to take the treat, releasing the item. The moment it drops, mark and deliver the treat. Then — and this is critical — give the item back. Yes, give it back.

If you always confiscate what the dog drops, they learn that dropping things means losing them. That creates a dog that clamps down harder or swallows faster. Giving the item back (when safe) teaches the dog that cooperation is not a trap.
