Teach Speak First

The second route flips the logic: put barking on cue before you ever ask for quiet. The idea is control. Once a dog will bark because you asked, silence becomes just another thing you can ask for.

Trigger a bark, mark it with "yes," and reward. Repeat until your dog barks on the word "speak" alone, with no doorbell needed. Now you have a switch you can flip on — which means you also have one to flip off. Say "speak," get the bark, lure with a treat, and the bark drops into the silence you'll soon call "quiet."
