It multiplies the possible combinations
Adding one lowercase letter multiplies the number of possible passwords by 26. Use the full keyboard — upper and lowercase letters, digits, and symbols — and each extra character multiplies the possibilities by about 95. That is why a few more characters matter far more than swapping an a for an @.
