LESSON 4 · Forces You Feel Every Day
Sweating Is Brilliant Engineering
Your body's cooling system exploits latent heat. When sweat evaporates, it turns from liquid to gas — and that phase change pulls enormous energy from your skin. Evaporating one gram of sweat removes about 2,400 joules of heat.
This is why humid days feel hotter than dry days at the same temperature. High humidity slows evaporation, which means:
- Sweat stays liquid on your skin
- Less latent heat gets absorbed
- Your body can't cool itself well
Dogs can't sweat (except through their paw pads), so they pant instead — evaporating water from their tongues. Same physics, different delivery.
