Mapping Body Signals

A uniform magnetic field would make every proton in the body resonate at the same frequency — giving you a signal but no spatial information. You'd know what but not where.

Since the Larmor frequency depends on field strength, protons at different positions resonate at slightly different frequencies. By analyzing which frequencies come from where, a computer reconstructs the exact position of each signal source — building a three-dimensional map of soft tissue.
