Air Demands a New Body
Water holds your weight; air does not. That single fact forced a near-total rebuild. A spine that once flexed for swimming now had to hold a body up against gravity. Fins that paddled had to become limbs that pushed.
Breathing changed too. Early bony fish already had simple lungs, gulping air at the surface when oxygen ran low in stagnant water. The fish heading ashore inherited that ancient air-breathing organ directly and leaned on it harder. (In many other fish, that same primitive lung was later remodeled into the gas-filled swim bladder used for buoyancy.) The lung wasn't a new invention for land — it was an old trick the walkers already carried.

Borrowed Bones for Hearing
Sound moves differently through air than through water, so hearing had to be reinvented too. The fix came from spare parts. In mammals (including you), two bones that once hinged the fish jaw were, over millions of years, shrunk and repurposed into two of the three tiny middle-ear bones that amplify faint airborne sounds. Other land animals — reptiles, birds, and amphibians — took a different route and kept just a single ear bone.
Nothing new was designed. Evolution simply gave old jaw hardware a second career inside the ear.
