Root Communication Channels

Roots trade chemical signals directly through the soil and through shared fungal links. Strikingly, a root can tell self from stranger: it reads chemical markers on nearby roots and adjusts its own growth, spreading toward kin and pulling back from unrelated competitors. Recognition happens at the molecular level, before any leaf or branch is involved.

One Shared Bank Account

A popular way to picture the fungal network is as a shared bank account: carbon flowing from trees with plenty to those running low, shaded seedlings drawing on sunlit adults overhead, surplus parked where it is needed next. It is a striking image, but a debated one. Carbon does move between plants — that much has been measured — yet whether forests genuinely pool and redistribute resources in a way that benefits the recipients is far from settled. Some ecologists caution that the amounts transferred are often small, and that competition still shapes the forest as much as any sharing does.
