Carrying Tools
Veined octopuses gather coconut shell halves, tuck them under the body, and carry them across open seafloor to use as armor later. That is genuine tool use: collecting an object that offers no benefit right now, only a payoff in a future the animal is preparing for.
Most tool use in nature solves an immediate problem. Saving a shelter for a threat that has not arrived yet is different — it suggests the octopus can hold a future need in mind and act on it ahead of time.
