Architect Mick Pearce designed the **Eastgate Centre** in Zimbabwe after studying **termite mounds**, which he imagined as natural air conditioners. Scientists later found mounds work more as ventilation systems than coolers, yet his clever use of thermal mass and airflow still pays off: the building runs on roughly **90% less energy** for climate control than a typical building its size.
