Two Scales At Once

The lotus trick only works because it is built on two sizes at the same time. There are tiny bumps you could see under a basic microscope, and on top of each bump sit even smaller wax crystals.

Neither layer works alone. Smooth wax gets dirty; bare bumps still hold water. Stacked together, they trap a thin cushion of air so almost nothing touches the leaf. That is the hard part for inventors: copying not one feature, but a structure that works across two scales at the same time.
