A single ancestor, 6,000-10,000 years ago
Everyone with blue eyes appears to trace back to one person who carried a new **OCA2 switch mutation** sometime in the last 6,000 to 10,000 years. Before then, humans had brown eyes. Blue eyes hold no blue pigment at all; they simply make less melanin and scatter light, the same way the sky looks blue.
