Chlorophyll reflects green
Why no leaf ever evolved a fully light-absorbing black is still an open question. A black leaf would capture more energy, yet chlorophyll absorbs red and blue wavelengths strongly while reflecting green back to our eyes. One idea is that early light-using microbes had already claimed part of the spectrum, leaving green for later plants.
