Photosynthesis and the Atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere was not always oxygen-rich. For the first 2 billion years, it contained mostly nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

The sudden oxygen abundance was a catastrophe for existing life — oxygen is toxic to organisms that evolved without it. But it enabled aerobic respiration, which extracts far more energy from food than anaerobic metabolism and eventually powered complex life.
