LESSON 1 · Poison, Cure & Everything Between

The Blood-Brain Barrier

Many drugs face one more chemical hurdle: crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This tight layer of cells keeps large or charged molecules out of the brain, shielding it from toxins.

Only small, fat-soluble molecules slip through easily. That's why caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol reach your brain so fast. Drug companies spend billions trying to ferry other medicines across this barrier.
