It blocks a liver enzyme
Grapefruit contains compounds (furanocoumarins) that disable the CYP3A4 enzyme for many hours. A normal dose of certain drugs can then build up to dangerous levels. The effect was discovered by accident, when researchers used grapefruit juice to mask the taste of alcohol in a study.
