Where Calculus Hides

Every GPS position fix, every medication dose, every climate model runs on calculus. Once GPS knows your distance to each satellite, it reads how fast you're traveling from the rate of change of those distances — a derivative. (The satellites' atomic clocks tick slightly off due to relativity, but that drift is fixed by a constant clock-rate offset set before launch, not by calculus; left uncorrected, your location would wander off by miles in a day.) Insulin pumps, meanwhile, adjust dose delivery by integrating glucose rates in real time.

Next time you see a weather app's temperature graph, trace the steepest part with your finger. That steepest slope is where temperature changed fastest, and the number describing that steepness is a derivative. The area under that same curve from midnight to noon adds up every degree-hour into the morning's total heat — an integral. One graph, both halves of calculus at once.
