Feel the Curve

Rates are meant to be felt, not just computed. Pour water into a tall glass and watch the surface rise: slow where the glass is wide, faster once the glass narrows. Same volume per second, different rate of height change — because the cross-section changes.

Now drive a familiar route and watch the speedometer for two minutes. Mentally mark the moment the needle peaked. That peak is where the derivative of your speed was zero — your acceleration turned from positive to negative. You felt it as the forward push easing off.

After one week of these small observations, the word "rate" stops being abstract. You start seeing rates in water levels, traffic flow, sunlight angle, and the pace of a conversation.
