LESSON 1 · Fractions Demystified

Fold and Shade

Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half. Shade one half. Fold the folded paper again — the shading now shows 1/4. Fold once more: 1/8. Each fold halves the visible portion, physically constructing the sequence 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16.

Now do the opposite. Take a pizza cut into 12 slices. Eat 3 — that is 3/12 = 1/4. Eat 5 — that is 5/12, sitting just below 1/2 on the fraction scale.

Running these physical drills for ten minutes burns the visual meaning of fractions into your intuition. You stop translating "3/4" into calculator steps and start seeing the actual amount of pizza your friend just took from the box.
