LESSON 2 · Fractions Demystified

Improper to Mixed Numbers

An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator: 7/4, 9/5, and 4/4 all qualify. It represents one whole or more. Converting it to a mixed number separates the whole-number part from the leftover fraction, which often makes the size easier to feel.

Lowest Terms

A fraction is in lowest terms when the only common factor of numerator and denominator is 1. Is 15/28 already simplified? Factors of 15 are 1, 3, 5, 15. Factors of 28 are 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28. They share only 1, so 15/28 is in lowest terms — and since 15 is below 28, it is also a proper fraction.
