LESSON 5 · Geometry Around You

Shapes at Scale

Double every side of a 3D shape and its volume grows 8× while its surface area grows only 4×. This mismatch shapes biology. A blue whale can exist because its body mass (volume) grows faster than its heat loss (surface area), so it stays warm easily. Shrink the same body to mouse size and the ratio flips — too little surface to trap heat, too much to shed.

Archimedes loved this interplay. He proved that a sphere inside a cylinder has exactly 2/3 the cylinder's volume — a result so dear to him that he asked for a sphere and cylinder carved on his tomb.
