Cylinders use less material per unit volume and handle internal pressure better
A cylinder with the same volume as a rectangular box needs noticeably less surface area, so it uses less metal. The curved wall also spreads carbonation pressure evenly, letting thin aluminum hold force that would buckle a flat panel. Geometry and engineering agree.
