Because it leads straight to contradictions — allow it, and you can "prove" nonsense like 1 = 2.
Since zero times any number is still zero, a result like "0 divided by 0" could honestly be claimed to equal any number at all. With no single, unique answer, the operation has to be ruled out as undefined, which is why software guards hard against it.
