LESSON 4 · The Lies Maps Tell
Mapping in a Crisis
During the 2010 Haiti earthquake, volunteers mapped Port-au-Prince within 48 hours, ahead of professional teams. Aid organizations used those maps to coordinate rescue efforts.
The Missing Maps project now works ahead of disasters, tracing satellite imagery to add roads and buildings in remote regions before crises hit. Hundreds of millions of people have appeared on the map for the first time, making them visible to aid workers when help is needed.
