LESSON 4 · The Lies Maps Tell
Maps and Privacy Concerns
Modern mapping raises serious privacy questions. Google Street View photographs many public roads and places, capturing people and property along the way, but coverage is uneven by country and region. Several countries blocked it at first before reaching compromise agreements.
Map apps also build detailed behavior profiles. Companies can infer where you live, work, and shop from the location data your phone transmits - data that surfaces in criminal cases, divorces, and targeted ads. Satellite imagery has even democratized surveillance: journalists have used public images to expose detention camps and track military movements. The same technology that empowers citizens can also serve authoritarians.
