LESSON 8 · WWII: Secrets & Turning Points
The Final Hours
Hitler's last days were a surreal mix of delusion and despair:
- On April 28, he learned that Heinrich Himmler had secretly tried to negotiate surrender — he screamed about betrayal
- In the early hours of April 29, he married Eva Braun in a brief civil ceremony inside the bunker
- He dictated his final testament, blaming the Jews for the war and naming Admiral Donitz as his successor
- He poisoned his dog Blondi with cyanide to test whether the capsules worked
On April 30, around 3:30 PM, Hitler and Eva Braun retreated to his private study. She took cyanide. He shot himself in the right temple with a Walther PPK pistol. Soviet troops reached the Chancellery on May 2, two days after his death.
