The Conspiracy Machine

Stalin deliberately spread doubt about Hitler's death. He told Allied leaders that Hitler might have escaped by submarine to Spain or South America. Why? A dead Hitler was useless politically. A possibly-alive Hitler justified Soviet military buildup and control over Eastern Europe.

The conspiracy theories took on lives of their own. Theories placed Hitler in Argentina and Antarctica. DNA analysis of skull fragments held by Russian intelligence in 2009 showed they actually belonged to a woman.
