Sacred Colors

Each color of Egyptian makeup carried a specific religious meaning. Green malachite was tied to Hathor, goddess of beauty, while black kohl connected the wearer to Horus, the falcon god. Applying these colors each morning was a small daily ritual that renewed the wearer's bond with the divine.

Egyptians expected to wear makeup in the afterlife too, so cosmetic kits were packed among essential burial goods. Tutankhamun's tomb held alabaster vessels of kohl and ointment, set aside and ready for eternal use.
