Malachite mined in the Sinai and Eastern Desert
The green color came from malachite, a copper mineral dug from mines in the Sinai and Egypt's Eastern Desert as early as 4000 BC. Workers ground the stone into a fine powder and blended it with animal fat or plant oil to make a smooth, vivid paint for the eyelids.
