LESSON 2 · True Stories of the Wild West
A Short, Violent Life
The Lincoln County War of 1878 turned a teenager into an outlaw. It was a feud between rival merchants and ranchers fighting over who would control the local cattle and supply trade. Billy worked for the Tunstall side, and when his employer was murdered, he joined the fight to avenge him.
The other faction had the law on its side, so Billy and his friends were branded criminals almost overnight.
Three years later, Garrett tracked him to Pete Maxwell's ranch. Garrett sat waiting in a dark bedroom when Billy walked in and softly asked, "Who is it?" Garrett fired twice. The Kid was dead before he hit the floor.
