LESSON 4 · True Stories of the Wild West

The Long Shadow

The gunfight became legendary not for what happened, but for how it was retold.

In his later years, Wyatt Earp courted writers and filmmakers, feeding them a tidy version where the brave lawman beat the outlaws. Movies ran with it, scrubbing away the politics, the wounds, and the doubts.

The real fight was messy, disputed, and condemned by plenty of people who saw it. But audiences wanted a clean tale of good against evil, and that is the myth that won.
