Who Censored the Past
Christian authorities suppressed pagan stories that contradicted their theology. Renaissance scholars preserved what they found morally acceptable and let the rest decay. Victorian translators replaced explicit content with euphemisms.
Each generation imposed its own moral framework on ancient stories, losing crucial context in the process. The original myths were performed publicly at Athenian festivals, where staged violence and tragedy drew enormous crowds in a theatre that could hold many thousands.
