The 40-day isolation period — 'quarantina' in Italian — from 14th century Venice
During the Black Death, Venetian-controlled ports forced arriving ships to wait in isolation before anyone could come ashore. That waiting period was set at 40 days — 'quaranta giorni' — which is exactly where the word 'quarantine' comes from.
