LESSON 4 · Invisible Killers: Plagues

The Zoonotic Threat

The biggest pandemic risk today comes from zoonotic spillover — viruses jumping from animals to humans. HIV came from chimpanzees. Ebola likely from bats. SARS from civets. COVID-19's origins remain debated, but the pattern is clear: as humans destroy habitats and push wildlife closer to people, the chances of a new spillover keep rising.

Factory farms pack thousands of animals together, creating perfect breeding grounds for new viruses. A single poultry facility can house 100,000 birds — one infected animal can spark a pandemic-capable mutation.
