The Rights of Man
The early Revolution achieved remarkable things before the violence began. The Declaration of the Rights of Man established principles of individual liberty, equal justice, and popular sovereignty that remain foundational to democratic government today.
The Revolution also abolished feudal privileges, declared all male citizens equal before the law, and introduced rights of free speech and property. Yet within five years, the same government was guillotining political opponents at a rate that horrified even its original supporters.
