In 1793 the government launched a Revolutionary calendar to break from the Catholic past. Months got poetic names tied to the seasons, like Thermidor for the heat of summer. Weeks ran ten days, which gave workers only one rest day in ten. It proved deeply unpopular and Napoleon scrapped it in 1806.
