Code That Outlasted Empire

Napoleon's most enduring legacy is not military but legal. The Napoleonic Code of 1804 established principles of civil law that still influence legal systems in over seventy countries. It guaranteed equality before the law, property rights, religious freedom, and the end of feudal privileges.

Unlike the tangled laws it replaced, the Code was written in clear, plain language so ordinary citizens could read and understand it themselves. Napoleon prized it above his battlefield wins, reportedly saying his true glory was not his victories but this single book of law.
