LESSON 1 · Capitalism, Socialism & the In-Between
Traditional Economies
Before capitalism and socialism, traditional economies dominated human history for thousands of years. Resources were allocated through custom, tradition, and community agreement rather than markets or central plans.
Your parents were farmers, so you became a farmer. The village shared resources according to ancient customs. Change happened slowly if at all. Stability came at the cost of innovation and growth.
Today, purely traditional economies are nearly extinct, but their influence persists. Gift economies among indigenous peoples, family farms, and informal markets in developing nations all carry echoes of humanity's oldest economic system.
