The Automation Connection

UBI's strongest argument may be forward-looking. If AI and automation significantly reduce the number of jobs available, traditional employment cannot remain the sole mechanism for distributing income in society.

The current system assumes that most adults work and earn enough to support themselves. If that assumption breaks — not for everyone, but for a growing share of the population — some alternative distribution mechanism becomes necessary.

UBI is not the only option, but it is the simplest and most universal. Job guarantee programs, expanded public employment, and negative income taxes are alternatives. The automation question forces society to choose which approach best maintains social cohesion in a world with potentially fewer jobs.
