The Energy Transition

The shift from fossil fuels to clean energy is happening faster than most projections anticipated. Solar energy costs have fallen ninety percent since 2010. Wind energy costs have fallen seventy percent. In many regions, building new renewable capacity is now cheaper than operating existing coal plants.

The transition is deeply uneven. Wealthy nations decarbonize grids while developing countries — where most future emissions growth occurs — still lack affordable clean alternatives and suffer most from a problem they contributed least to.
