More than 15,000 a year, the fastest pace ever recorded
Scientists now name well over 15,000 new species annually, more than in any earlier period of history, the great majority of them insects and other arthropods. Yet this record pace of discovery is still a race against the clock, because habitat destruction can erase populations faster than taxonomists can catalogue them.
