Hidden messages did not end with the Renaissance. In the 1700s, tiny portraits held a lock of a lover's hair in a secret compartment. Victorian photos used props to signal status, mourning, or family ties to anyone who knew the code.
Today a curated social media profile follows the same logic. The chosen photos, backgrounds, and objects build a public identity as deliberately as any marchioness planned her portrait. The tools changed; the instinct did not.
