Many of these symbols have gone silent. Objects a 1500s viewer understood at a glance now take scholars years of research to decode, and some meanings may be gone for good.

It gets harder still with private symbolism — a detail that meant something only to the sitter and a few close friends. A small object might have been an inside joke, a personal vow, or a romantic hint never meant for the rest of us to read.
