LESSON 5 · Art's Greatest Unsolved Mysteries

A Risky Bet

Turning a paid group portrait into a drama was a gamble. Rembrandt treated his clients not as a row of equal faces but as actors in a scene. Captain Cocq strides forward in commanding black, one hand thrown out as if giving an order. His lieutenant catches a burst of light on a golden coat. Behind them, men load muskets, raise a banner, and crowd in around the edges — motion everywhere, no two figures alike.
