LESSON 5 · Art of the Ancient World
Tombs as Eternal Galleries
Egyptian tombs worked as permanent galleries for an audience of one: the soul of the deceased. The dead person appears at an ideal age regardless of how old they were at death, surrounded by the pleasures they hoped to enjoy forever — hunting, feasting, and abundant harvests in bright mineral pigments.
This art had a job to do. Egyptians believed painted images became real in the afterlife: depicted food would nourish the soul, painted servants would serve, and images of loved ones would keep the dead company forever.
