LESSON 3 · Rebels of Modern Art

Art as Product

Warhol called his studio The Factory — a deliberate provocation. Art was produced there like any other commercial product, with assistants doing much of the physical work. He once said, "Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art." This philosophy turned the artist from a romantic genius into a brand manager.

Pop Art's legacy is everywhere. Every artist who uses advertising imagery, brand logos, or celebrity portraits as raw material — from Jeff Koons to Banksy to meme culture — works in territory that Warhol, Lichtenstein, and their generation claimed and legitimized.
